Lust List: Roses and Peonies

Every spring, inevitably floral prints make their way back into our wardrobe.  I can’t help but giggle a little inside when I think about spring florals because of the line from Devil Wears Prada where Miranda drawls, “Florals?  For spring?  Groundbreaking.”  This year, it’s not just bright florals in general, roses and peonies are having their turn in the limelight.  You guys know I have a small obsession with roses so I’m in fashion heaven!  I’ve put together a handful of my favorite prints available right now.  Happy  lusting!

This is What a California Girl in Chicago Looks Like

image

I’m in Chicago!  It feels weird to be here since I’ve been planning my styling weekend at Trunk Club for what feels like forever!   It didn’t feel like it would ever happen!  So far I must say I really love this city!  We’ve been walking all over the place getting the tour from our good friends that moved here almost a year ago.  We’ve totally lucked out at this point weather wise too.  Everyone in San Diego looked at us like we were nuts to go to Chicago in the winter but it really hasn’t been too bad.  I mean, I’ve been pretty bundled so really I have no excuse to complain about not being warm!  It snowed a few inches the first day while I was at Trunk Club and it felt like I was living in a beautiful snow globe!!  I know the novelty of snow has worn off for most of you people that live in snow on a regular basis but I just absolutely love it while I’m on vacation.

My absolute essentials for cold weather are ear muffs and long scarves.  I hate how my ears and chin feel when they get too cold.  Those are the first items I pack in my carry on so I can whip them out easily when we are leaving the airport.  Otherwise, having a nice thick wool coat that hits almost at my ankles has been a life saver in windy moments.

Pants On Repeat

DSC05861I warned you I’d be wearing these pants a lot this winter.  Even though every time I put them on, my boyfriend teases me with things like “You’re wearing your pajamas outside again?”  But when pants like this are sitting in my closet, I’m wearing them!  Pajama look or not!  hehehe.  I try to make it less bedroom looking by piling on lots of jewelry.  Stacks of bracelets glam up everything!

One Dress: Day to Night

It’s the time of year when there are holiday parties, family dinners, drinks with friends, etc etc basically every day until New Year’s Day.  If I were to buy a new look for all of these festive occasions, everyone would get coal under the tree only because it’s cheap and I’m sure they were bad at some point this year.  The remedy for this holiday party conundrum?  Finding a dress you can tweak to wear in many different scenarios (this is when a NOT boring LBD comes in handy).  This dress from House of Eleven is a perfect blend of sexy and conservative.  It hugs your curves while allowing a long enough hem line that your boss won’t freak.  Here’s how I’d wear this dress to the office then out for the night with my friends.

DAY LOOK:  Wearing the dress with a white blouse underneath makes it much more work appropriate.  I kept accessories simple with just a big ring, simple necklace, and sparkly studs.

NIGHT LOOK:  A fun night look is all about accessorizing a great dress with statement pieces.  I took two chunky necklaces and layered them.  I mean, they’re great on their own so isn’t it even more fantastic to wear them together?!  Add a fun clutch and some booties and you’re ready for that holiday party!

Just Add a Hat!

Wandering In Heels Brixton HatOne of my fashion philosophies is “When in doubt, add a hat.”  When I’m dressing casual, I feel like a great hat pulls my look together.  You could wear a plain white T and jeans with a great hat and Voila!  Instant style!  This Brixton hat is my latest go to and I love it!  I kind of feel the same way about booties too.  They works with everything from skirts to jeans and are so on trend.  These ones I think I paid like $8 for on Amazon 2 or 3 years ago.  I’m such a deal hunter, paying full price actually hurts me!  Keep searching and no doubt you’ll find some really great cheapies out there!

Breaking out the Boots

Boots!

Boots!!  I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about being able to wear my boots again.  They make me feel pulled together even when I’m just wearing jeans and a tank.  These ones from Stuart Weitzman work with basically everything and have a thin enough calf that I can’t wear them on their own.  Three cheers for no slouching!

Happy First Day of Fall!

Fall Fashion

It’s officially the first day of fall!!  Yes!!  While I wait for it to cool down to full on fall weather, I’ll be slowly transitioning in my cold weather wardrobe.  To do that, I’ll be wearing things like a sweater and shorts (today!), knee high boots and a tank, etc.  You’ll see!  I’m just happy it’s FALL!!!

I’m Wearing White After Labor Day… Gasp!

White pants

I’m committing a fashion crime… and I don’t care!  That whole “No white after Labor Day” thing just seems silly!  I mean, for a lot of the world, it still feels like summer.  And for one hemisphere, summer is just getting started!  So why no white?! Let’s boycott!

How to Update Your Fall Wardrobe and NOT Break The Bank

There is a special place in my heart for Fall Fashion.  I love the colors, the cuts, layers, layers, and more layers!!  I just can’t get enough!  But that being said, I can’t buy every single piece every year or my credit card would burst into flames!  Here are my tips to bring some of the trends for this fall into your wardrobe without having to spend a fortune.

TRY A STATEMENT COAT:

Statement coats in bold prints, angular cuts, loud colors, and mixed fabrics are all over the runway for fall.  But a statement coat is just that… a statement.  And do you really want to shell out a lot of money to make the same statement for all of fall??  Not me!  I’ll be picking up some budget coats to stay on trend but when I’m done with that statement, I won’t have major buyer’s remorse.  Try some of these budget friendly options.

ADD SOME COBALT BLUE INTO THE MIX:

Cobalt is a hot hue this fall on everything from coats, to dresses, to shoes.  You don’t need to spend tons of money on this trend to be stylish.  Try adding just a couple of items for a pop of color to add to your current wardrobe.  Luckily, this color matches with so many other colors that are most likely already in your closet.  Try mixing it with orange, yellow, white, black, grey, or burgundy!

A LITTLE LEATHER, PLEASE!

This fall, leather comes in every shape and form.  Lucky for us, faux leather has come a long way and is surprisingly, well… leather-like!  Picking up some faux leather is a lot more budget friendly than the real alternative and a lot more animal friendly too!  Try a quilted variety for a great on trend look.

San Diego Beer

DSC04999

We were invited to attend The San Diego History Center’s History Happy Hour this past Friday and I’m so happy we were able to go!  It was such a blast!  There were about a dozen booths set up throughout the exhibit to taste beer created by home brew clubs from San Diego County.  This whole event was to promote the Bottled & Kegged exhibition that shows San Diego’s beer history.  I was surprised by how long craft beers have been produced in my home town!  Some of the images and fact were dated back to the 1880s!  This is a must see exhibit and the History Happy Hours are a fun way to do it!  Hope to see you at the next one on September 27th!
