Done with Summer

Last days of Summer

I’m crossing my fingers that this will be my last summer weather post.  It’s so toasty warm here still that my sweaters haven’t awoken from their hibernation boxes quite yet. However, there is still hope!  Tonight was the first night that there was actually a chill in the air!  So I might be just about ready to be done with summer and dressing for fall.  So excited!!  In the mean time, I’m still all about color… not that you couldn’t tell!

How to Update Your Fall Wardrobe and NOT Break The Bank

There is a special place in my heart for Fall Fashion.  I love the colors, the cuts, layers, layers, and more layers!!  I just can’t get enough!  But that being said, I can’t buy every single piece every year or my credit card would burst into flames!  Here are my tips to bring some of the trends for this fall into your wardrobe without having to spend a fortune.

TRY A STATEMENT COAT:

Statement coats in bold prints, angular cuts, loud colors, and mixed fabrics are all over the runway for fall.  But a statement coat is just that… a statement.  And do you really want to shell out a lot of money to make the same statement for all of fall??  Not me!  I’ll be picking up some budget coats to stay on trend but when I’m done with that statement, I won’t have major buyer’s remorse.  Try some of these budget friendly options.

ADD SOME COBALT BLUE INTO THE MIX:

Cobalt is a hot hue this fall on everything from coats, to dresses, to shoes.  You don’t need to spend tons of money on this trend to be stylish.  Try adding just a couple of items for a pop of color to add to your current wardrobe.  Luckily, this color matches with so many other colors that are most likely already in your closet.  Try mixing it with orange, yellow, white, black, grey, or burgundy!

A LITTLE LEATHER, PLEASE!

This fall, leather comes in every shape and form.  Lucky for us, faux leather has come a long way and is surprisingly, well… leather-like!  Picking up some faux leather is a lot more budget friendly than the real alternative and a lot more animal friendly too!  Try a quilted variety for a great on trend look.

We were invited to attend The San Diego History Center’s History Happy Hour this past Friday and I’m so happy we were able to go!  It was such a blast!  There were about a dozen booths set up throughout the exhibit to taste beer created by home brew clubs from San Diego County.  This whole event was to promote the Bottled & Kegged exhibition that shows San Diego’s beer history.  I was surprised by how long craft beers have been produced in my home town!  Some of the images and fact were dated back to the 1880s!  This is a must see exhibit and the History Happy Hours are a fun way to do it!  Hope to see you at the next one on September 27th!

Denim on Denim Look

Main Denim on Denim image

I love a good denim on denim look. It’s totally comfortable and really easy to pull off!  How I like to wear denim on denim is to choose one dark version and one lighter version.  With all that denim going on, I feel a little like I could be working on a ranch as a chic cowgirl!  So to glamour it up a little bit, I wear it with some sparkly vintage crystal earrings and a necklace from my grandma.  I’m also wearing a lacy bandeau underneath so I unbuttoned the top an extra button.  Of course I like to top it off with some amazing shiny red heels and lips!  Can you tell I’m into red at the moment?

Tip:  Wear the darker version where you are largest for a slimming effect.  I wear mine on the bottom since I am quite “hippy.”

Hammer Time

Me with my Sole Society HeelsRemember those gorgeous shoes Sole Society sent me to style?  Here’s the complete look!  Since the Kadene shoe has such a great mix of tough and feminine, I decided to do the same with my overall look.

I wore a pair of leopard print slouchy pants (that I like to lovingly call my “hammer pants”) and topped it off with a simple silk blouse.  To toughen up the look, I layered on a few gold chain necklaces from H&M.  Finally, I added a pop of color with my red patent leather Kate Spade dot bag and a red lip.  For those of you looking for a great red lip that actually lasts, try the YSL Glossy Stain (I’m wearing number 9).  It’s really the best ever!

These shoes are sure to be a staple in my wardrobe.  They’ll look great with jeans, skirts, dresses… you name it!

Birthday on the Beach: Coronado, CA

Me at Coronado BeachI’m getting to the age now that most of my friends are getting married and having kids.  So what that means is there are a lot of fun times to be had celebrating these life events!  Today, we celebrated our good friend’s daughter’s third birthday on the beach in Coronado.  It’s a gorgeous day for some fun in the sun: we splashed in the water, played with bubbles, and enjoyed some yummy cupcakes.

The water was too cold for my liking so I stuck to the shore in some bermuda shorts, a bandeau top, and a cover up.  Of course, I needed my trusty UPF 50+ protection hat to shield my face.  I want to look 25 when I’m 50 after all!!  Who doesn’t?!  This Wildfox coverup is one of my favorites!  It’s perfect for walking around a beach town or over your swimsuit.  I topped off my look with a chunky ocean inspired necklace (I’ve worn it before, remember?).

Sorbet, Anyone?

Close UpI love a bright silk blouse.  It’s basically the easiest piece in my wardrobe to wear.  You could wear it with blue, grey, or white bottoms and it requires only a few accessories.  Ta Da!  Instant style.  This bright orange sorbet colored one is by Zoe & Sam.  I got mine on Gilt.com so keep your eyes peeled for that great deal!

The booties are another one of my wardrobe staples.  These are just cheapies I bought on Amazon about 2 years ago but I’ve worn them to death!  The studs add a fun dash of excitement to otherwise boring tan booties.  I’m very much all for mixing designer and not designer.  If you love it, wear it!

Throw Back Thursday: Catalina Island

The Inn on Mount Ada stepsI love the whole idea of Throw Back Thursday.  It gives us a chance to look through old photos and relive some fond memories.  For our 3rd year together last October, Tyler and I went to Catalina Island’s historic Inn on Mount Ada to celebrate.  If you ever want to get spoiled rotten, this is the place to do it!  Situated on the tip top of the hill next to the main part of Avalon, the views from all the rooms are spectacular.  It’s fun too that you have access to free champagne, beer, and wine whenever you like.  We took advantage of that by starting each morning with a round of mimosas.  Hey, we were on vacation!!  Other than that perk, we had some of the most delicious breakfasts and lunches each day and they also hosted a really nice happy hour in the lounge room.

Cars are hard to come by on the Island.  Apparently, residents are on a mile long waiting list to bring a car over.  So most people get around the island on golf carts.  The Inn provides each room with a golf cart for your use whenever you like.  We spent a lot of our visit just wandering around on the golf cart trying to find the best view on the island.  Avalon is a gorgeous little tourist town where you can do anything from lay in the sand to fancy dinners.  Many people come to the island just for the day so after the last ferry leaves, the island is much more quiet and you feel like you’re on your own.

The weekend we were there happened to be a really big jazz festival.  We didn’t plan on going but lucked into some tickets from guests at the Inn who needed to leave early.  We thought, “Why not?!” So we wandered on over to the Avalon Casino Ballroom not really expecting much since we didn’t consider ourselves jazz fans but ended up having the most ridiculously good time! We clapped, danced, and congaed the night away to bands like Trombone Shorty.  I love when amazing memorable nights just happen on accident.  I have to say now… I’m officially a jazz fan!  Can you believe it?!

The Beaded Day Skirt

Beaded Skirt Day StyleWhy should beads and sparkles be reserved for the night?  Why doesn’t the day get to have any fun?  I vote we all start wearing pieces originally reserved for happy hours and nights on the town out in the daylight!  Hear Hear!!

I love all my sparkly intricate pieces but they often just sit in my closet unworn.  It doesn’t make sense though because these pretty gems could easily be styled down a bit and worn wherever you darn well please!  I toned down the beadwork on this Zara skirt by adding a simple shaped Brian Lichtenberg ‘Homies’ T-shirt and a light denim Zara shirt.  Since the skirt has enough bling on its own, I kept accessories simple with just a few basic silver rings.  Carpe Diem, you beautiful skirt!!

Isn't the beadwork on this skirt simply gorgeous?
